Information about Career Transition Assistance announced in the 2017-18 Budget.

Many older Australians looking for work have spent years working in industries that are now in decline, while others may simply be looking for a new occupation. To be competitive in the job market, they will need support to develop new, in-demand skills.

Career Transition Assistance is part of the Government's $110 million Mature Age Employment Package announced in the 2017-18 Federal Budget, and aims to help mature age job seekers become more competitive in their local labour market, through a six to eight-week program. The program will consist of skills assessments, exploration of suitable occupations, research of local labour markets, tailoring job applications and résumés, developing a Career Pathway Plan and learning resilience strategies. It will also incorporate core digital literacy development where appropriate.

Who will be eligible

Individuals will be eligible if they are:

  • registered with a jobactive provider within one of the five trial regions; and
  • 50 years of age or older.

Program Trial

Career Transition Assistance will be trialled in five locations from 2 July 2018, ahead of a national rollout scheduled in 2020.

The five trial regions are Ballarat (Victoria), Somerset (Queensland), Central West (New South Wales), Adelaide South (South Australia) and Perth North (Western Australia).

The lessons learnt from the five trial regions will be incorporated into the programs national rollout.

Implementation – Next Steps

Further details on the program (including guidelines) will be released closer to the program start date of 2 July 2018.
