The Employer Breakfast was hosted by Woolworths and News Corp to highlight the issue of youth unemployment and encourage employers to support the Generation Success initiative. The event also highlighted the value that young Australians gain from their first job – the learning of new skills, the building of self-esteem, a greater sense of independence and confidence in the future.
Young representatives from Generation Success partner companies presented a video to employers on the value of their first jobs.
Directly after the Breakfast an Employer Roundtable was held and included some of Australia’s largest employers and the Hon. Luke Hartsuyker, Assistant Minister for Employment. They discussed youth employment and shared:
- practical strategies that employers have successfully implemented to attract and retain young Australians in their organisations; and
- their ideas on tackling youth employment.
The Employer Roundtable also included a presentation from young representatives from Generation Success partner companies on their vision for young people in the workplace, challenges young people experience and possible solutions that companies could consider. The young people also presented CEO’s with a Youth Statement outlining their advice to future young job seekers.
Following the roundtable, the participating companies and the Department of Employment are now considering a number of ideas and issues that were raised.
