The Indigenous Australian Government Development Program (IAGDP) is a well established entry-level employment and development program of 15 month duration open to Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are interested in working in the Australian Public Service (APS).

The aim of the IAGDP is to significantly contribute to improving employment opportunities, experiences and outcomes for Indigenous Australians in the APS.  We value and draw on the skills, capability and unique life experiences that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees can bring to the APS and are committed to developing a talented and versatile APS workforce.

The IAGDP has positions that may be available in Canberra, some state capital cities and large regional centres.

All APS agencies are encouraged to host IAGDP placements, some of the APS agencies participating include:

  • Australian Crime Commission (ACC)
  • Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC)
  • Bureau of Meteorology (BOM)
  • Department of Agriculture
  • Department of Communications and the Arts
  • Department of Defence
  • Department of Finance
  • Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)
  • Department of Health
  • Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development
  • Department of Jobs and Small Business
  • Department of Parliamentary Services
  • Department of Social Services
  • Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C)

To be a successful IAGDP participant you will:

  • Be placed with an APS Agency and undertake duties at the APS 3 level (or equivalent);
  • Undertake three program components including : a diploma-level qualification, full-time work experience and on-the-job-training and access to career relevant learning and development;
  • After the initial 15 month period continue to work in a permanent full-time position in your APS Agency and may be advanced to the APS 4 level (or equivalent) which attracts a higher remuneration;
  • Abide by the IAGDP Guidelines and be governed by the APS Values and Employment Principles; and
  • Be a part of the IAGDP and explore your potential APS career!
