The Indigenous Australian Government Development Program (IAGDP) is an 18 month entry-level employment and development program open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are interested in working in the Australian Public Service (APS).
The aim of the program is to significantly contribute to improving employment opportunities, experiences and outcomes for Indigenous Australians in the Australian Public Service. We value and draw on the skills, capability and unique life experiences that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees can bring and are committed to developing a talented and versatile workforce.
Positions may be available in Canberra, some capital cities and large regional centres.
All APS agencies are encouraged to host program participants. Past participating agencies include:

How does the IAGDP program work?
- Interested people can apply for the program online between 10 April – 19 May 2019. The application process involves a written application and interview and successful applicants can expect to be contacted in September 2019;
- Successful applicants commence work in February 2020 in an APS agency and undertake duties at the APS 3 level (or equivalent);
- IAGDP participants must undertake three program components including: a diploma-level qualification, full-time work experience and on-the-job-training and access to career relevant learning and development;
- After the initial 18 month period, IAGDP participants continue to work in a permanent full-time position in the host APS agency and may be advanced to the APS 4 level (or equivalent) which attracts a higher salary;
- IAGDP participants must abide by the IAGDP Guidelines and behave in a way that upholds the APS Values.
What sort of work will I be doing?
The type of work you do will vary according to the agency you are working in, but your work could involve answering enquiries from the public, records management, data entry, human resources management, communications, project management, contract management, procurement, and other general administrative, clerical, operational or systems support.
