In Bacchus Marsh, West of Melbourne, the local community is benefiting from the hard work of participants in the Australian Government’s Work for the Dole programme who are upgrading the Maddingley Park clubhouse and grounds and restoring the popular adventure playground to its former glory.

Under the direction of the host organisation, Maddingley Park Committee of Management, and with the support of the local community, the Lions and Rotary clubs and sporting groups, the participants have been painting the clubhouse and kiosk, gravelling pathways, removing rubbish, planting and maintaining the gardens.

Heather Chambers, Work for the Dole supervisor at Maddingley Park, said ‘The participants are learning lots of new skills, they are learning to work as a team, to use their initiative and most importantly they are learning to network.’

Heather was pleased to report that a number of participants on the Maddingley Park activity had used their new networking skills and tapped into local contacts to find employment. ‘It’s awesome when they find a new job,’ says Heather.

One participant, a former teacher, had a long break from teaching and found it difficult to get back into the profession. She used the contacts she’d made through the Work for the Dole activity to find a job and is now employed at Melton Specialist School as a relief teacher.

‘There are huge networks in this community’ said Heather. ‘By doing this work and helping the community, these participants have built networks which have helped them find a job.’

‘I think it is a fantastic scheme with huge benefits to the community and the participants’ said Heather.

This Work for the Dole activity is set to continue with planning underway to plant a further 500 trees and undertaking the daily maintenance of the park.
