Explainer: Labour Market Information Portal

The Labour Market Information Portal brings together data and insights from a range of official sources to increase your understanding of local labour markets.

What is the Labour Market Information Portal?

The portal was launched in 2005 to help employment service providers better understand their local labour markets, thus enabling them to provide the best service to job seekers.

The scope of information published on the portal has increased significantly since 2005 and it is now home to a vast range of labour market information, catering to a range of users. The portal has established a reputation as a premier source of regional labour market data, and is now much easier to navigate following improvements to the user interface and data-mapping channel.

This is a convenient way to stay up-to-date with the latest data and insights from the department, such as the recently released Online Recruitment report and Insights from the Survey of Employers’ Recruitment Experiences. Findings in these reports include:

  • Over the past four years, the proportion of employment vacancies advertised online has increased by 15 percentage points to 60%.
    • Social media is a rapidly emerging recruitment platform, accounting for 9% of vacancies in 2016-17 – up from 2% in 2013-14.
  • In 2017, 72% of businesses attempted to recruit. Employers attracted an average of 17 applicants per vacancy and interviewed three applicants.
