The Review was a requirement of section 72 of the Safe Work Australia Act 2008 (Cth) (SWA Act) and examined:
- the extent to which Safe Work Australia has fulfilled its role and functions
- the need for Safe Work Australia’s role and functions to be updated, and
- the future role and functions for Safe Work Australia.
The Review included a desktop analysis of Safe Work Australia’s activities as reflected in published material and targeted discussions with stakeholders, including all Safe Work Australia members.
The Review found that there is consensus among stakeholders that Safe Work Australia, with its strong framework for tripartite engagement, provides an effective forum for engagement on the development of national WHS policy and workers compensation arrangements.
The Review recommends amendments to the SWA Act to clarify Safe Work Australia’s role and to update, consolidate and simplify Safe Work Australia’s functions to ensure these are clear, achievable and support Safe Work Australia’s role into the future.
The Government is consulting stakeholders on the Review recommendations.
The Review report is now available.
